Our hypothesis was that by applying artistic principles of color theory, we could create colormaps that would provide the ability to see greater detail in high resolution datasets thereby facilitating the discovery and study of features of interest within the data. The collaboration between F. Samsel and M. Peterson led to the further development of Nested colormaps – inserting a complete colormap within a small range of the full data space. This study was designed to test a domain scientist exploratory task: identify and follow the location of the Gulf Stream across a range of latitudes.
